The changing portrayal of our hero

How did the modern legend develop?

By the time the first tales were written down at the end of the Middle Ages a lot of the legend as we know it, is already in place. But there is also a lot missing. There was no Maid Marian and no Friar Tuck. He didn’t give the stolen riches to the poor either.

The legend of Robin Hood had grown, been adapted and developed over the centuries and the stories often changed to fit in with society at the time.

Between the 16th and 18th century the two key drivers were the emergence of the May Games and the development of ballads and books. Click here to follow the story.
